Before you ask

Four quick answers

How hard is the climb, honestly?

Moderate. Steps and boardwalk to the main viewpoint, unmade trail and loose rock above it. Most people who walk regularly manage it; it is the heat, not the gradient, that catches people out.

Can a day trip do the sunrise?

No. Day boats leave Labuan Bajo after first light and arrive about two hours into the timeline above. Sunrise on Padar is what an overnight charter buys.

What should I bring ashore?

Water and shoes with grip. There is no shade, no water and no shop on the island — whatever you did not carry up, you do without.

Is it worth it in the wet season?

The ridge is green rather than gold, and cloud can take the view entirely. Some of the best photographs come out of those mornings, but it is a gamble in a way the dry season is not.
