A ranger post, and the animals around it
A jetty, an elevated boardwalk, a ranger station and savannah behind it. Dragons gather near the post because it is shade and water, not because they are fed.

Park and ranger conservation fees are paid on-site, per person, and are higher on weekends and holidays. Walks run to ranger scheduling and the daily visitor cap.
Ninety minutes ashore
From a boat anchored in the bay. Charters usually take the medium trail unless the group asks otherwise.
Tender ashore
A short run to the jetty, then the elevated boardwalk to the ranger post.

The walk
Savannah and dry forest. Dragons, deer, buffalo and megapode nests, in roughly that order of likelihood.
Back to the post
The last stretch returns past the kitchen area, where the larger animals tend to lie up.

Four quick answers
Rinca or Komodo Island?
Rinca is closer, the walk is shorter, and in several seasons the sightings are better. Komodo Island is the famous name and the longer day. Most charters do Rinca; 4D3N itineraries reach both.
How close do you get?
Closer than most people expect, and the ranger sets the distance. They carry a forked stick, which is not decoration — these are large wild predators.
Are sightings guaranteed?
Near the ranger post, in the morning, they are very likely. Guaranteed is not a word anyone honest uses about wild animals.
Which trail should we take?
The medium one, unless someone in the group would rather not. Short adds little walking and sees the same area near the post; long is savannah and heat for a modest gain.
Put Rinca early in the day
The animals are more active and the trail is empty. That is a routing decision, and it is ours to get right.
